You may be one of those people who have collected cookbooks over the years that ended up, used or unused, gathering dust on bookshelves or in boxes piled up in the attic, garage or basement. Old, rare, classic, vintage, antique and collectible cookbooks can be a hidden source of instant cash. You can easily learn how to sell these old cookbooks.

And many people underestimate the value that these old, collectible cookbooks have, for example Betty Crocker Cookbooks and Better Homes & Gardens Cookbooks, and have never even thought about selling them. There are many other old, valuable cookbooks of course. But for the purpose of this article we’ll start with these two well known cookbook publishers’ cookbooks. They’ll be easier to research.

Do you have any old Better Homes and Gardens Cook Books? How about Betty Crocker Cook Books from the 1950s, 1960s, or popular editions from 1959, 1961 or older? Pie or plaid covers? Betty Crocker New Picture Cookbook or Betty Crocker Boys and Girls Cook Books or any others?

Maybe you do have some of these cookbooks now. Maybe you have some at mom’s or grandma’s house or even better at great-grandma’s house. Perhaps you’ve seen them at garage sales. A lot of old cookbooks can be valuable-worth a lot of money. Even those of lesser value may sell for ten times the original price.

Whether you have cook books with binders, hardcovers, plaid covers, or pie covers, you need to do a little research. You’ll need to know the title, year of publication, edition (usually printed inside the book in front) and condition, before you can come up with the TRUE value.

You can start by gathering as much of these facts as possible. If any of your old books have been signed by the author or in some cases the illustrator, that’ll bring up the price significantly. Then, first of all, go to Google and type in the exact title – for example, ‘Betty Crocker Cookbook’ and the year published, and see what comes up. Then try using the same phrase with cook book as two words. If you have a plaid or pie cover or other distinct cover, then try again adding ‘plaid cover’ or ‘pie cover’. Do it again and type in the edition if known. You may find some others for sale or that have already sold. Then try again with your variations and add the words – excellent condition, fine condition or good condition.

Next go to eBay and go to the search feature and then ‘completed listings’. Search by the category ‘cookbooks’ and the title of your cookbook and look for similar titles and editions. Only look at those that have sold, to get a feel for the price range. In terms of pricing, ignore the cookbooks that are still for sale. Many factors go into why they didn’t sell. Finding sold copies in these cookbook listings will give you a general idea of the range they’ve sold in. The binding, year and condition are just some of the variable factors. You can do the same with your Better Homes & Gardens Cookbooks. Then try some of the other old, rare, vintage or antique cookbooks that you’ve collected.

The deciding factor for price in every case will be the condition of the cookbook. Condition is everything. Handle your cookbooks carefully. Collectors and buyers expect cookbooks to have an occasional spot on them. If they’re fragile, handle them with white cotton gloves. Never put them in airtight bags or containers, because the moisture content in the pages will cause them to mildew. You can bag them but leave them open. In any case protect them.

So you need to decide on the condition of your cookbooks, find the price range of cookbooks that have sold on completed listings and then decide how to price your book. Be very wary of putting any old, rare, vintage or antique cookbooks on eBay for 99 cents or without a reserve price. You don’t want someone walking off with your precious book for just pennies. The sold cookbooks on eBay completed listings have a distinct advantage. You know what people are actually paying for cookbooks and current price ranges.

As for books that list the value of cookbooks, I have them all. But I find them worthless because the values do not reflect what people actually pay for cookbooks or the current prices, whether it is Betty Crocker Cookbooks, Better Home & Gardens Cookbooks or any others. And the cookbook value books go rapidly out of date as time passes since publication.

Besides eBay there are a lot of other ways to sell your cookbooks on the Internet or outside of the Internet. There is too much to go into in this short article. There are many other trade secrets. One easy way-there is a free cookbook listing service online, for old, rare, vintage or antique cookbooks where you can list your cookbooks for sale, yes free of charge. Collectors and buyers come to the site. You can continue to sell them using other methods and not wait for a buyer to make contact from the site. You can always have your listing removed from the site if it sells or you sell it another way.

You can buy and sell old cookbooks easily once you become familiar with one cookbook and you’ll probably be able to find more of them at garage sales. With this basic knowledge of how to sell cookbooks, you’ve just become a mini-expert on selling cookbooks. So go to your cookbook shelves now and see what you already have and start from there. Once you’re an expert on Betty Crocker Cookbooks and Better Homes and Gardens Cookbooks you can start researching other old, rare, classic, vintage, antique and collectible cookbooks.

huge tour of the auction lot up at the tractor show. I didnt get too many videos of up there, but my Bolens was one of the show tractors and i ran it from Monday-Sunday in the parade and drove it around showing it off hours each day. It would have had the foot throttle if i would have started working on it a day before i did, but at least the straight pipes were on it. Enjoy the huge auction lot tour, you might find something interesting in this video that you like.
Help answer the question about vintage antiques
Paris: Is there a neighborhood for antiques and vintage stuff ?
I will be traveling to Paris soon and I wanted to know of stores and shops for old stuff and if there is a flea market for that, thanks a lot !

Chinese antiques arrived in the west to awe and great admiration, and eventual copies. As the Ming vase appearance of blue and white “bone China” pottery came to England, the initial English versions created by Josiah Wedgewood Bone China would have been offered to the Queen. As Queen Victoria took to articles of Chinese antiques, this interest followed on down through the ranks of nobility, until Wedgewood became vastly rich by making such fine China available to the public in a relatively modest smoke burning factory in England.

All this time really as war booty by England over China during the infamous Opium Wars, in which England forced China to accept opium addiction soon up to millions where British ships traded. Britain held control of Shanghai and built it into a modern European city, where the city parks had signs “No Chinese Allowed”. Hong Kong was granted to Britain on a ninety nine year lease as it was a vast empty harbor in south China that would serve as the west Pacific repair base for the British Pacific fleet: near quickly settled English Canadians into Victoria in now west coast Canada would be east Pacific base.

Now to now. Hong Kong showed China that to be free and capitalist was to make you gloriously rich, as their leader finally admitted in 1979. So, as in early civilized Greece, a council of 30 agreed to stay in power, use the word socialism but in a special Chinese way. That is, test by creating special economic zones on the coast, little capitalist Hong Kongs, and see how that works. Well! It has rather taken over all of east China until the world color CO2 coal filthy air map shows east China as the most vast sea of unhealthy polluted air on earth.

The dirty unfiltered coal dust air is so intense that the ash is now falling on the lungs and food plants of California and up the west coast of North America. Enough, fire breathing dragon, enough. They are adding one new coal burning factory a week in this area, while we line up with our huge buggies at the mega stores to buy their junk we don’t need, which within the decade will be at the yard sale you neighbors have. Until you realize you all bought the same modern fake versions of the same type of stuff.

Not you. You noticed that like Japan before, who at least sold us smaller more efficient cars that smartened our car makers up, Japan got rich and bought up many of our treasures. So, while the soon to be rich individuals of China work for one dollar an hour now, but are thrilled with their government monitored cellphone, is there anything wise we can do? Yes, there is. Check each net site you can, and buy Chinese antiques ahead of the curve.

Clear your mantle, Mickey, and start picking up bargains in authentic Chinese antiques, which they are not making any more of. Let lead head Ned push that huge buggy around consuming, the ruin of debt, while you invest, in the best, and wait the test, of time. And add several zeros to the price one day, and let it sit serene on some net, but enjoy it each day. And in this uncertain world, when rich Susie Wong wants her great grand mother’s Ming vase back, you might agree.

Be inscrutible though, on the price for her Chinese antiques. Higher, your eyebrows imply.

Antique furniture is very popular today. With the real estate market in the state it is in now, many real estate marketers believe that placing some antique furniture in a home will greatly increase the assumed sale value. Additionally, spending money on buying antique furniture for a home is a wise investment. The antique furniture never loses its value, and in many cases appreciates; the value of the antique furniture may increase as time goes by. Although it is very easy to buy antique furniture today (you can even get the delivered to your doorsteps by ordering it online), several factors are to be considered to make your purchase more profitable. This guide will help you to identify and buy the best antique furniture available out there.

Identifying the real Antique Furniture

You should always remember the fact that the word “antique” refers to any object that is more than 100 years old. When it comes to antique furniture, there are two types such as “real antique furniture” and “Antique design inspired furniture”. The real antique furniture is a great treasure, which will be many years old. On the other hand, the antique design inspired ones will only reflect the antique design. The material will not be really antique. Identifying the real antique furniture is very easy. You may be aware of the fact that woods shrinks as a result of aging. Antique furniture will have irregular dimensions. If the finishing of the furniture is excellent and new looking then it may not be a real antique.

Determining the value of the antique furniture

All kinds of antique furniture will not have the same value. It depends upon several factors like age, quality, application, style, make etc. In order to find the value of the furniture, you need to be knowledgeable about antiques. You can get lots of information about antique furniture if you spend a little time researching on the Internet. Commonly, antique furniture will be valued based on the condition, rarity, and history.

Checking the Solidity of the antique furniture

You should also remember the fact that antique furniture retains its value only if it is fully functional. Most antique experts insist on moving and using the furniture to ensure the solidity and functionality.

Buying Antique Furniture online

You can buy antique furniture online and get it delivered to your doorstep while you just relax. However, it is very much important to make sure that the online antique furniture store of your choice is genuine as you won’t be able to check the furniture before they get shipped to you.

No matter how you buy it, the real antique furniture is a valuable asset in any home.

The aesthetic value of antique furniture pieces is one of the reasons why many antique collectors prefer these items. There is a wide variety of styles and era to choose from. Antique collectors have, in some ways, mastered the skills in knowing what a good buy is, but as novice, you may need more time and experience.

If you plan to buy antique furniture piece to add glamour to your home, be on the lookout for reproductions. The following helpful information will guide you on the basics of buying authentic and practical antique furniture.

Observe the dimensions. Authentic antique furniture does not have uniform dimensions since wood, which most antique furniture are made of, shrinks with age. Otherwise, there is a strong possibility that what you are eyeing for is not genuine at all. To clearly see the various angles of furniture, take the time to view it in broad daylight.

Test the solidity of the item. Antique furniture has no real value if it loses its functionality. What use is an authentic antique chair when you cannot actually sit on it? Antique shops allow buyers to sit or move items for verification. Antique experts also suggest this method.

Make sure that parts are available. Good quality antique furniture has complete functional or decorative parts as well.

Look for proof of antiquity. Since the age of an antique is one of the major determinants of authenticity, you should have the assurance that the item for sale passed the age definition of an antique which is at least a hundred years old. One way to verify this is to look for signs of depreciation in the item such as dust accumulation in its corners which are hard to reach by regular dusting. If these simple signs are not available, experts say, the item might not be as old as an antique should be. You must also consider whether a piece of furniture has been restored or refinished. Restoration on antique pieces may decrease the value of the item especially if done poorly.

Examine the surface colour. The surface finish of a piece of antique furniture is also a significant detail to observe. A quality piece of antique furniture should show flat colouring except for some shades which might have naturally occur due to age. The back side of a piece may differ in appearance with the surface but it should have unvaried shades as well.

Interview the antique shop owner. You will get more details through a one on one interview with the shop owner. Ask about the era and style of the furniture which you may later research on to be more familiar with the item. You may also request for a warranty of the item.

Consider antique restoration. While some would no longer consider unstable antique furniture, you may choose to have the item restored to its former glory through the help of a professional antique restorer.

Antique restoration is the art of restoring an antique to its natural appearance with the purpose of making it appear new. In some cases, antique restoration refers to the process of restoring an antique for preservation or conservation of its features to avoid more wear and tear.

Get a second opinion. If you are hesitant about the value of your target antique piece of furniture, you may hire the expertise of antique experts. What’s more, you may also have the furniture appraised to determine its actual value.

Many of us share a love for Old World tradition and the classic elegance to be found in a fine piece of English or Continental antique furniture, but few of us can afford the four or five figure price tag that comes with the genuine article. Fortunately there is a solution. Antique reproduction furniture can provide the same look and feel at a fraction of the cost. In fact, you can enjoy a high quality reproduction of an antique item that could otherwise only be found in a museum or royal palace for little more than you would pay for the typical contemporary mass-produced item of the High Street.

From the traditional old English designs of the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian Eras to the unparalleled opulence of the court of Louis XV and the French Empire, the timeless designs of the Old World offer inspiration to a wide array of tastes.

Apart from furniture, high quality antique reproductions can bring a variety of practical as well as decorative treasures to life. With fine porcelain, glassware, silver and silver plate wares, bronzes, clocks, and a wide range of other unique antique decorative pieces often carrying price tags as high as those on furniture, reproductions of these kinds of items can as well bring enjoyment and splendour without breaking the bank.

Find an established specialist who deals in both antique as well as reproduction items that understands the difference between the two and represents them accurately. Use of the terms “style” or “in the manner of” generally mean that the item is a contemporary or vintage reproduction. The terms “antique,” “period,” and “circa” will usually mean that the piece is original to the historical era mentioned – and much more expensive!

The antique teddy bears date back to 1902. This all started when the Washington Post printed a cartoon that showed President Theodore Roosevelt sparing the life of a bear during one of his hunts.

The image of antique teddy bears was originally created by a shopkeeper’s wife. This small business was owned by the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company and because of the popularity of the collectible antique teddy bears, teddy bear collection became such a hit.

A lot of antique teddy bears factories have been producing different designs of these collectibles for years now. In fact, there are some that have been in the business for over 100 years.

The new factories mimic the old styles of the factories that have been around longer. If you are collecting antique teddy bears, you should be sure that what you are getting are actually vintage designs, if you are paying at a vintage price.

Collectors of antique teddy bears are on the lookout for those distinctive buttons behind the ears. This is because it is the trademark of Steiff, a manufacturer of antique teddy bears that has collaborated with German manufacturers.

It was in 1903 when an American buyer viewed these at the Leipzig Fair and imported several thousands. Those faithful collectors see these as treasures.

Nowadays, the newer antique teddy bears that are collectible are those that have been restored. They call these the “heirloom” bears. These are the damaged or unwanted stuffed bears that have been restored.

In fact, some collectors have these restored at a cheap rate and add these to their collection. They see the results as extraordinary. Sometimes, these bears have movable hips, shoulder joints, and necks which add character to the appearance of the toys.

Then there are the hand sewn eyes as well as the embroidered noses which make them pretty special for any collector. Manufacturers also add special features such as big, shiny bow ties on the necks. If these are given as gifts, it is the perfect touch to it.

For affordable antique teddy bears, collectors seek “Rare Bears.” These are very cuddly and are made with mink. They are manufactured in different combinations and whenever they show up in stores, people flock these.

Then there are the new antique teddy bears collectibles like the Boyd’s series. These are stuffed bears that have a wide variety of characters. These are very in demand especially during the Holiday seasons.

They also have other occasional themes which come with the human personalities and human poses. The attentions to details as well as the clever costuming are the reasons why these antique teddy bears are very desirable.

There is a large difference between the overall affect that an antique cut diamond has as compared to the brilliance of modern cut diamonds. While antique cut diamonds exude a certain subtle panache, the modern cuts provide a brilliance that is unparalleled in its own intense way.

Many jewelry designers have been attracted by the subtlety of the antique cut and have adopted it in their jewelry designs to enhance the overall look of the setting. Another aspect that makes the antique cut so appealing and mesmerizing is the fact that each antique cut diamond looks different and reflects the shape of the rough diamond. The subtlety of the piece also ensures that the attention of the onlooker is directed towards the overall design and setting and not only on the glittering diamonds.

The antique diamond cuts that are being patronized these days are

Briolette – The round teardrop shape finds use in earrings and necklaces and other designs of jewelry where a dangling piece can enhance the look. A simple diamond drop can add to the look of earring piece and multiple such pieces are fit to adorn the neck of a princess. The briolette has triangular facets and no girdle. The size that they are most popular in is between 0.50 carats to 1.00 carats.

Rose – The rose antique cut has a flat base and a triangular facet that makes a peak. The flat base can have a round, triangular or pear shape and therefore lends itself to being used in various kinds of settings and designs. This antique cut was the most popular prior to the discovery and development of the round one. Most rose cuts are available in the range of 3mm to 6mm.

Bead – This completely faceted diamond is like a bead, as the name suggest. It can be drilled longitudinally through the center to be used in a string. A string of diamond beads like a pearl string can make many heads turn. These diamond beads are also a favorite among the designers when they want to space pearl necklaces and other jewels. The average range of diamond beads found in the market range from 2mm to 4mm.

Rondelle – Rondelle is a diamond disk and has faceted edges. Due to the nature of the cut, it is generally cut from rough diamonds that are extremely flat to begin with. These are mostly used as spacers between colored stones, jewels, gold beads or pearls. The range that the rondelle is found in is larger and these flattened disks come in the range of 2mm to 6mm.

Among these antique cuts, the round brilliant is considered the most superior. The nature of the cut allows for a higher and more efficient light return. Though modern designers consider brilliance and light return efficiency as important, they lay a far higher emphasis on design layout, setting and the sculptural artwork. The emphasis on these elements makes the antique cut diamond a more attractive option.

Given the high demand for antique cut diamonds, these started to be produced in bulk. The orchestrated unevenness in shape and design is not appreciated by many designers since it is against the ethos of antique cuts. But the benefits of using these antique cut diamonds far outweigh the negatives associated with mass production. The fact that the antique cuts are subtle, bring out the best in the setting and design and draw attention to the shape of the face up are reasons enough for the jewelry designers to choose antique cut diamonds over regular ones. And with the ever increasing demand for designer jewelry, antique cut diamonds are set to take the industry with their grace, elegance and panache.

Antiques and collectibles are two hot categories on eBay. Collectibles by themselves represent billions of dollars in sales every year. This boom has been fueled by an ever-expanding e-commerce market place. No longer confined to only a local interest base, antique and collectible sellers now have a huge opportunity to cash in on their unique finds. And buyers can shop the world for the items they crave. Whether online or offline, buying and selling is the same – namely, people will continue to seek the same type of info and ask the same basic questions.

If antiques and collectibles interest you there are numerous online resources you can refer to in order to better understand the opportunities present in these categories.

Make a Friend out of Your Computer:

Plan on spending some time checking web sites devoted to antiques and collectibles. The bad news is, it takes time to look at all the good ones. The good news is, you’ll not only love checking these sites out but you’ll learn a lot along the way. A good place to start is with ‘The Kovels’ Top Twenty list’ at kovels.com. While you’re there get a free issue of Kovels on Antiques and Collectibles. Google, ‘antiques and collectibles’ to tap into a huge research database.

Visit a Bookstore:

There are a lot of great books on the shelves featuring antiques and collectibles. Your local library may have an assortment of books you can borrow free. Amazon.com offers a large list of popular books you can purchase at reasonable prices, particularly if you shop the used book bin. If you know of others interested in sharing the cost of books you can quickly save a great deal on your purchases. Form a private ‘resource library’ for family and friends to contribute to. And don’t forget magazines such as ‘ANTIQUES & COLLECTING MAGAZINE’ at acmagazine.com.

Check out Forums:

As with anything in life, experience helps. Today you have that experience at hand with a few click of a mouse button. Join as many online forums and groups devoted to antiques and collectibles as you can find. You are sure to find lots of people who share your interests. Try fantiques.com, antiques-collectibles-auction-news.com, forumgalleries.com. Google ‘antiques and collectibles forums’ for more suggestions. And don’t overlook the boards, such as HGTV’s Antiques & Collectibles Message Board.

Attend Shows:

Asking questions at shows will go a long way towards building your knowledge base. Seek out those items that really interest you and ask questions. Pay attention to what is being said around you as well. Here, it pays to be a good listener. Carrying a tape recorder will help you pickup on things you may have missed or to recall those things you’ve heard. Having a cell phone with a built in camera can be a big plus here as well. Check out ‘Google Directory for Antiques/Shows_and_Events/’ for a listing of various events. Many locations publish shows and event news and can easily be found online.

Specialization: Key to focus:

It’s a good idea, when starting out, that you specialize in one or two items that really interest you and that you can happily spend time learning about. The key is not to expend your energy chasing too many antiques or collectibles at once.

Gaining insight in your niche is vitally important. Mostly it takes time and a lot of questions and reading to get a good education. The more you learn about various objects the more you’ll be able to negotiate for the best prices when you buy. Remember that your profit is made when you buy. Selling is something you do to claim that profit. So don’t be afraid to ask questions before you buy. And, knowing your antiques well lets you negotiate the lowest prices. Asking for a discount when buying is to be expected. After all, when you sell your collectibles your buyer will also seek a discount. Plan on this when you buy. There are no “bad” prices, only bad negotiators.

Avoid Reserves When Selling:

You want to avoid reserves in the antique business when you sell. Placing a reserve price on your items is a quick way to lose two-thirds of your potential audience. If you’ve invested a lot in your items you can decide to set a reserve. Just remember that you will be limiting your ability to make a sale. Sometimes this won’t matter, at other times it may. To get a good idea of what your items will sell for look at similar items currently being sold.

Keep Good Records:

It pays to keep good records. Along with quality photos you’ll want some background information to include in the description. Get this at the time you are making the purchase! Don’t wait until you’ve dragged the stuff home before you start asking about the history of the items you’ve bought. Get all the information you can while standing before the seller and TAKE NOTES! You may even want to know who was the previous owner and if it would be possible to contact them to ask a few questions as well. In antiques and collectibles having the right information, the history of each item, can be a major reason why someone is compelled to buy from you rather then from someone else. The more you know, the more knowledgeable you come across.

Assessing Value:

Save having your antiques and collectible items appraised for the most expensive items you buy. Appraisals are expensive and not really necessary on items up to a $1,000. If you must know what it is worth you can check web sites like antiquemystique.com to assess value. Or Google “appraising antiques” for additional web sites.
